How to Spot Fake Job Offers: Warning Signs and What to Do

11 October 2026 · Career · 3 min read

Fake job offers are a real risk for anyone looking for work, and freshers are the easiest targets. A fake recruiter may sound professional, use the name of a well-known company and send a smart offer letter. The goal is always the same: your money, your bank details or your documents.

The simplest rule: a genuine employer never asks you to pay to get a job.

Warning signs of a fake job offer

  • They ask for money. A registration fee, security deposit, training charge, uniform fee, laptop deposit or “refundable” amount. Genuine employers pay you; you do not pay them.
  • You get the job without an interview. Or the “interview” is a few chat messages.
  • The salary is too good for the job. Very high pay for simple data entry or “like and share” work from home is a common trick.
  • They ask for an OTP, UPI PIN, card number or bank login. No employer needs these. Salary is paid into your account; they never need your PIN or OTP.
  • They will not give a company name, office address or landline. Or the email comes from a free address (gmail.com, yahoo.com) while claiming to be a big company.
  • They rush you. “Only two seats left, pay today.” Pressure is a sign of a scam.
  • They contact you only on WhatsApp or Telegram and refuse to meet or speak on a call.
  • The offer letter has spelling mistakes, a blurry logo or a different company name from the one you applied to.

Common job scams in India

Task-based “work from home” scams

You are paid a small amount for simple tasks such as liking videos or rating hotels. Then you are asked to “invest” to get bigger tasks, and the money disappears.

Fake placement agencies

An agency promises a job at a big company if you pay a fee first. After you pay, the interviews never happen.

Fake offer letters from big companies

You receive an offer letter that looks real, followed by a request to pay for “documentation”, “background verification” or a “laptop”.

Overseas job scams

A job abroad with a high salary, if you first pay for a visa, ticket or medical test. Check any overseas recruiter’s registration with the Ministry of External Affairs before you pay anything.

How to check a job is genuine

  1. Search the company name with words like “fraud” or “scam” and read what others say.
  2. Find the company’s official website and phone number yourself, and call to confirm the job exists.
  3. Check that the email comes from the company’s own domain.
  4. Meet at the company’s office for the interview, during working hours.
  5. Never share an OTP, PIN or password, whatever reason you are given.

What to do if you have been cheated

  • Stop all payments and do not share any more details.
  • Call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 as soon as possible, especially if you paid online. Acting quickly gives the best chance of stopping the money.
  • File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Tell your bank, and keep screenshots of chats, payment receipts and phone numbers.
